Do You Need Dental Crowns in Knoxville, TN?
A dental crown (also known as a “cap”) is a restoration that we use when a tooth is no longer a good candidate for a traditional filling and when we need to restore and protect teeth that have undergone endodontic treatment (root canal). We can use many types of materials for crowns, and we will discuss some of these materials below.
Why would you need a dental crown?
- You have a large cavity
- You have a cracked or broken tooth
- Your tooth is worn down
- Your tooth is discolored or misshapen
Your Procedure at Restore Prosthodontics and Implant Center
First, Dr. Thomas will discuss your options to determine if a crown is right for you. Then, if we decide that it is, he will carefully prepare the tooth by shaping it to fit the crown. An impression will be taken of your prepared tooth to create your custom-made crown, and while you wait for the permanent crown to be created, we'll place a temporary one for you to wear to protect your tooth. Once your final crown is ready, we will securely cement it into place to restore your tooth's function and appearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to make a dental crown?
A dental crown usually takes approximately two visits to make. At the first appointment, we prepare (shape) the tooth for the crown, replace any missing tooth structure with materials similar to those we use when bonding teeth, and take a mold. You will leave the office with a temporary crown in place, and when you return for the second visit, we will cement the crown with definitive cement.
What materials are used in dental crowns?
The materials we use in crowns depend upon the clinical situation. The various options include ceramics, metals, and a combination of ceramic and metal. A white metal known as zirconia is commonly used as it is an excellent hybrid of strength and esthetics.
How long will my crown last?
Crowns are designed to last for many, many years and must be kept clean in order to maximize their benefit. Many people don’t realize it, but cavities can still form around the edges of even the most well-made crown, and as such, proper brushing and flossing are important. And, if a tooth has a crown and has had root canal treatment, home care and regular 6-month checkups are especially critical because the tooth has no nerve; you will not feel it if a cavity begins to form.
